Chichester and its nearby coastline is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the South. Situated only a few miles from the stunning sandy beaches of the Witterings peninsula, and only a five-minute drive to the beautiful South Downs, it is a favourite with families an couples alike.

History

Dating back to time of Christ, the old city of Chichester is set within city walls, and comprises of four main streets that were originally built by the Romans. In fact, a huge Roman palace is situated nearby, restored to its former glory and is the largest surviving palace in Northern Europe.

Chichester is often thought of as a miniature Oxford, with many Georgian architectural features and quiet parks and gardens.

The Market Cross, which marks the spot where the four streets meet was given to the city in 1501 by Bishop Story to provide shelter for those selling produce and is the finest example in Britain.

Highlights
Some highlights of Chichester include the Norman Cathedral, build in 1076, the Chichester Festival Theatre, and a cruise around the Chichester Harbour, an area of outstanding natural beauty.
